According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, a definition of honor is “high respect”; and a definition for respect is “due regards for the feelings, wishes, rights or traditions of others”.
Honor and respect are things I take so seriously because I’ve experienced a lot of disregard for my feelings and wishes. I understand it can be easy to make light of or glide past another’s emotions in favor of lightening the mood, avoiding awkward situations or simply lacking understanding for the other person’s experience. Even so, a constant concern I have is that while I’m choosing to respect someone else, I’ll be disrespected in the process.
But living in fear is not productive. Easier said than done, but I know it’s best to do what I can to hear and understand others so I know how to best honor their wishes and rights. It’s never something I’ll be perfect at, but I will always aim to this behavior and mindset. May you always be and feel honored and be willing to learn how to best respect others.
